Basically, we rely on group moderation here. The more videos you submit that reach 10 votes, the greater your understanding of quality (and what should be going on here in general) likely becomes. The star system allows you to gain more moderating power as you submit more videos, as it's assumed you can be trusted with more responsibility as your experience here increases.

Anyone care to explain the stars and their significance? I looked them up and see they exist but for what reason?

Found it!

*dead for me. I can see all other videos here just fine, I can see other CH videos just fine, and I just cleared my cache, so I'm almost certain it's not just me.
I've appended to my original blog post citing your correction. I thought about correcting those errors, but after two years online, it seems a crime to erase them when they can be quite educational in their own right. Thanks again!
In reply to this comment by nibiyabi:
You've got a few grammar errors in there yourself (e.g., using "their" instead of "his or her"). I know this is a super late reply, but I might as well.

Westy, I can't focus on what you're saying because I'm spending more time deciphering your mistakes: the medium should deliver the message, not impede it. If you're being lazy, that's one choice, I guess... but I'm always willing to engage in a heathly discussion through comments. But how seriously do you think you appear if you're too lazy to write properly?
I've written in my blog about this extensively:

Yeah, I was just floored when I saw how many votes that thing had. Thanks for the *quality Sifting!
In reply to this comment by arsenault185:
OK all, Ants post (the little Korean pianist) is going to get a double promote. After watching that, I don't think you could show me anything worth a promote than that.
In reply to this comment by nibiyabi:
*quality . . . wish I could.
In reply to this comment by nibiyabi:
I decided to throw caution to the wind -- unsifted videos aren't so bad after all. How's my star look?
In reply to this comment by JAPR:
Legitimate excuses. I guess we'll let you get by with quality over quantity.
In reply to this comment by nibiyabi:
It's a rather unfortunate combination of a lack of free time and a fear of submitting a poorly-received video.
In reply to this comment by JAPR:
Your sift rate is depressingly low when you look at the average quality of your submissions.
